altec 1214 control console

can anyone here tell me more about the 1214, can it serve as a mic pre amp? is it warm? is the spring reverb cool? are they easy to fix? how much is one worth if it is mint? is it tube or solid state etc... thanks a lot.

Solid State.

Easy to fix with the Altec service manual.

6 low impedance microphone inputs.

Not sure what it is worth these days. Couple hundred bucks maybe.

I'm not a big fan of old Altec electronics.

I used to own one back in the 1970's and 1980's, but found it almost useless for anything other than its originally intended use - low cost sound reinforcement.

No, it can not be used effectively as a preamp. The microphone inputs are noisy and easily overloaded. I almost always had to use in-line 20 dB attenuators on them.

The reverb is an useless antique. Nothing but a cheap guitar amp style pair of springs. Far better is now available for much less money.
